Botox is derived from a bacterium called clostridium botulinum, which produces a nerve paralysing protein called Botulim Toxin that blocks neuro-muscular transmission. In simpler terms, what this means is that the botulinum toxin stops nerves from passing the chemical messager Acetylecholine to receptors in muscle tissue. This nerve-muscle blocking mechanism inhibits muscle contraction and causes a state of muscle relaxation.

Medically botox is used to treat spasms in muscles in medical conditions like strabismus, belpharospasm due to dytsonia (eye muscle problems), and migraine. However, the recent name of botox has made itself so fashionable as a cosmetic treatment, rather than medical therapeutic one. Hailed as the “wrinkle relaxant”, it is mainly injected into corrugator and procerus muscles to combat forehead frown lines (glabellar lines) - expression lines caused by contraction of the muscles fibres between the eyebrows which signal facial ageing.Another use of Botox is as a treatment to prevent Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

Botox only works on dynamic wrinkles, those formed as a result of facial expressions. It won't eradicate sagging skin or static wrinkles that remain on the face all the time, caused by sun and environmental exposure or age damage.

A deadly food poison, the full medical name of Botulinum Toxin suggests, it is actually a highly toxic chemical, which even at minute doses can be extremely noxious when intravenously administered, as it has the ability to induce rapid paralysis of muscles all over the body, including the lungs and heart. Although minimal side effects can begin with anything from allergic reactions, redness, swelling or pain, more severe cases can experience complications of surrounding facial muscle paralysis, with symptoms similar to what stroke patients may show, such as droopy eyelids, dysphagia (swallowing difficulty) due to toxin leakage into nearby masseter muscles of the jaw, and speech disorders. In drastic cases where lungs, heart or main organ systems become contaminated, it can even lead to breathing difficulty, respiratory failure and death. This is why Botox should only be administered by a highly skilled medical practitioner.

As it is so new, long term implications of botox treatments are not yet known and it is due to this uncertainty that many celebrities like Joan Collins are looking towards alternative, more scientifically safe ways to treat their wrinkles.

Cosmetic use of Botox is still in its hey day, as it was only approved to be used for such vanity related purposes by the FDA in 2002. As it is so new, long term implications of botox treatments are not yet known and it is due to this uncertainty that many celebrities like Joan Collins are looking towards alternative, more scientifically safe ways to treat their wrinkles. Also, celeb's like geri halliwell and individuals all over do not like the expressionless face and empty, gazing stare botox produces, which appears to eradicate a segment of one's personality and gives an unwelcoming plastic looking finish. Effects of Botox are temporary, and on the whole can last anything from 3-4 months. With each injection bing priced at around £200, regular treatments can become quite cost bearing.

Joan Collins vows never to have Botox, because the long-term effects of the wrinkle fighting disease remain unknown. She adds, "I think I look pretty good and a lot of it is down to my skincare regime"

The dangers can be apparent and do seem to surface from various research documents. A new recent Botox study indicates that the anti-wrinkle treatment could actually migrate from a recipient’s face to the brain. Scientists from the Italian National Research Council’s Institute of Neuroscience in Pisa who were conducting experiments with Botox in rats, have found that the toxin can make its way to the brain in those lab animals. However, there are some good signs and that is that also a recent review by Psychologists included that they believed the treatment is known to have made some patients much happier overall.

DR NIRDOSH COLLAGEN V.P SERUM Includes Boswellia

For an alternative skin kind and body safe approach, apply Collagen V.P. Serum twice daily to wrinkle ridden regions, like forehead furrows, and massage deeply into the skin for 1-2 mins, working against the direction of gravity (upwards motion) to evoke a muscle relaxant effect. The specific scientific unification of collagen molecules and boswellia in Collagen V.P. serum act to relax and soften appearance of expression lines naturally. Once the serum has absorbed into the skin, proceed to application of Collagen V.P. Face Cream to intensify the effect of wrinkle de-creasing.

THE CONTROL OF FACIAL EXPRESSIONS

Ensure you are consciously aware through the day of preventing voluntary formation of expression lines, like crow's, frown and smile lines, as these wrinkles are habitually formed through contractile force applied over a prolonged period and can easily be prevented. As Botox treats dynamic wrinkles – self inflicted facial lines that are moveable, one of the best solutions to unwrinkled skin, is to prevent formation of these lines in the first place. As we smile, squint or frown, the muscles around the mouth, eyes and forehead contract, causing the covering skin to also crease up. Eventually, as these expressions make regular occurrence, the skin indentations become more long standing, yet these wrinkles are created through human expressions and can be reversed by avoiding such movements.

SMOKERS MUST STOP!

As for smokers, you should be mindful of the fact that the actual act of smoking itself (inhaling nicotine), not only accelerates ageing dramatically, but the actual inhaling, exhaling movement causes smokers lines - perioral lines and wrinkles around the mouth region. The simple answer here is to stop smoking, as the toxins not only affect external facial ageing, but also aggravates lung disease like bronchitis, predisposing to enhanced risk of life threatening conditions like emphysema and lung cancer.

REGULAR PROFESSIONAL FACIALS

Finally, treat yourself to regular facials professionally, as certain facial massage techniques help reduce muscular tension. This in turn lessens indentations in the overlying skin which mimics and creases up as a result of the muscles beneath it contracting and so reduces the appearance of wrinkles.
